You see a gap, and you create something that bridges it.
That’s what the Adopt a Shop program is doing.
Thank you to all the co-creators who inspired and helped build the Adopt a Shop program!
The idea 💡
Over two years ago, High School shop teacher Sheldon D'Souza reached out and asked if I knew a company that could donate 200 hot wheels cars to hand out to his automotive students at grad. Surepoint Group said yes and the amazing Martin Socha and Greg Epp showed up and gave a PowerPoint presentation about their journey in the trades on the school shop floor. The students were fully engaged. The Shop class teachers loved it, and the grad students got their hot wheel cars as a small token of appreciation and reminder of their time in shop class. 💙
That was cool- Hey, let’s develop a program to connect Industry to Shop class!
The work 🛠
The last year has been spent creating the program with an amazing team and would not be even possible without the dedication and hard work of Amanda Macintyre-Steel and Ken Weipert from the Calgary Board of Education. The program would not exist without the hard work of Tammy Amstutz and full support of the Calgary Construction Association under the leadership of Bill Black.
🏁The real winners here are the students.
We’re investing in them. We are providing the shop teachers the resources to do what they do best - inspire and educate the next generation of builders.
