Over 30% Of Farm Operators Are Women

The 2021 Census of Agriculture recorded 79,795 female farm operators in Canada — 30.4% of all farm operators, and the first increase in the number of women farming in 30 years. Alberta ranks second in the country with 18,525 female farm operators, about 23% of the national total.

Nearly one in three Canadian farms is now run, at least in part, by a woman. And the products sitting on the shelf at most farm supply stores are built for men. This includes work gloves.

The research on this is:

• A Farm Management Canada study on the experience of farm women found that 68% struggle to find PPE that fits them.
• A CSA Group report on Canadian women's experiences with PPE found that half of women say their PPE doesn't fit properly, 43% find it uncomfortable, and 35% say women-specific options simply aren't available.
• Women report resorting to workarounds — rubber bands and duct tape to cinch down oversized gloves — just to get through the day.

Why does this matter for injuries specifically? Because an oversized glove isn't a minor annoyance; it could be an accident waiting to happen. Loose material snags on gates, wire, and moving machinery. Extra fabric at the fingertips kills grip strength and dexterity, so tools slip and knots take twice as long to tie. And when a glove is uncomfortable enough, it comes off — which is how a fencing job ends with bare hands on barbed wire.

The "pink it and shrink it" approach — taking a men's glove and making it smaller — doesn't fix this. Women's hands aren't just smaller; the proportions are different. A glove built for women needs to be patterned for women from the start.
